NYC Subway Map
The New York City (NYC) subway is one of the largest and most complicated public transportation systems in the world. It is also one of the oldest in existence today and accommodates millions of commuters’ everyday. The New York City Subway is owned by the city of New York. It is a subsidiary organization of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and is also known as the “MTA New York City Transit”. The NYC subway has exactly 468 stations in operation. This is one of the major reasons why having a NYC subway map is imperative.
A Look at the Numbers
Just a glimpse at the numbers tells us that the NYC subway in the year 2009 alone gave close to 1.580 billion rides. That is a staggering number. This translated to an average of around five million rides taken on weekdays, 2.9 million and 2.3 million on Saturday and Sunday alone. The only other subway systems that carry or accommodate more commuters is the Tokyo, Russian and Seoul subways. However, the New York City Subway system is still bigger than all the other railway transit systems in the U.S. combined.
The Importance of a NYC Subway Map
A NYC subway map is very important especially for people who are not familiar with the New York subway system. The current New York City Subway maps was originally designed by Michael Hertz Associates just over three decades ago. This is the official transit map for the subway system. This mapping system is said to be pretty accurate geographically with exception to Staten Island which over the years has reduced in size.
These subway maps are said to be cluttered and quite cumbersome when compared to traditional maps. However, the NYC subway map by Michael Hertz Associates has become useful for tourists trying to navigate the city of New York. The New York rail lines run alongside major New York streets thus helping Tourists find their way around the city. There were earlier versions of the subway maps with one dating all the way back to the late 1950’s. Thought they were more aesthetically pleasing and easier to understand, these maps were fairly inaccurate in geographical terms.
Other Options Available
Today, there are many NYC subway maps available to the public and these are privately produced schematics. You can either find published versions of the NYC subway maps such as the Hagstrom map or even simpler versions online which can be downloaded.
