NYC Subway Lessons
-
New arrivals in NY usually feel a little nervous when first using the famous subway. However, there’s no need to worry since it no longer looks anything like a 1970s film representation. These days, it is kept clean, safe and is quick (most of the time).
Here are a few tips to help you on your way:
Plan ahead:
Use the sites HopStop or Trips123 to make sure you know the best route ahead of time. There are plenty of options on the sites including combining different modes of transportation such as buses, subway and walking and they will come out with a route guide to match. If you are in a rush and don’t have time to check them out, have no fear since there are subway maps in each and every station. If there is a period of severe weather or other incidents, by checking the MTA website you can keep abreast of all the latest updates.
How to pay:
There are no longer any subway tokens, nowadays you need to get your hands on a Metrocard. Easily found in almost any station, these cards allow you to buy credit which can be used for journeys. The standard price is 2 bucks for a one way ride, though if you load up your card with $10 plus, you’ll get a 20% bonus. If your card is lost or stolen, you can get sorted out quickly and easily by checking out the MTA website.
In the case of kids, those under 44” are able to travel for free when with an adult. The elderly and disabled may also be entitled to discounted travel at $1 per journey.
Staying Safe:
The NY system is fairly safe, especially if you don’t do anything silly! Generally it is best to avoid travelling late at night and in less densely populated areas at these times. Try to go with someone you know if you are uncertain about this. Lastly, be sensible and don’t rush up or down stairs and escalators, keep a close eye on your belongings and you should be fine.
Manners on the subway:
When you’re only a few inches from the next person, it’s important to have proper etiquette. For example, let people off the train first before getting on, don’t take up lots of seats yourself and be kind and offer your seat to those who are more in need like pregnant women or people with disabilities.
